Movie Night: June 20 - Lonely are the Brave

Movie Night is proud to present Lonely are the Brave, Saturday, June 20 at 8:00 p.m., at the Copper Mountain Mesa Community Center.

Kirk Douglas and Gena Rowlands star in the movie Lonely are the Brave, an adaptation of the Edward Abbey book, The Brave Cowboy. The last cowboy comes head-to-head with the march of civilization in this modern western. The bar fight with the one-armed man is action-packed, Gena Rowlands is hot, hot, hot, and the final chase scene is filled with suspense. I couldn't even watch to the end the first time I watched the movie.

Ken will make his gourmet hotdogs - either Hebrew National or Nathans - and Mary Helen will make something delectible - she's famous for her baking, being the one who bakes the biscuits for the biscuits and gravy of First Saturday breakfast fame.

So bring a chair (and if you forget you can borrow one from the Center), and a cooler with your favorite beverage, and enjoy a movie under the stars with the warm desert breeze blowing by. Kip projects the movie on a real movie screen on the back of the cargo container so it's as good as the real deal.

All donations benefit the Copper Mountain Mesa Community Center. The CMMCC is funded by memberships and member donations and take no money from the government. Your donations help keep the doors open.

Hope to see you there!

Hi-Desert Star Column #228

Our little Community is gathering at the Center, for the “Movie under the Stars”,  at sunset this Saturday June 20th. We are all excited about another great, desert-connected classic; hosted by Ken and Teresa Sitz and Kip Fjeld. This month it’s Lonely are the Brave (1962); with Kirk Douglas and Gena Rowlands. The hotdogs are high quality and really good, with all the fixin’s; the popcorn, rock candies, baked goods etc. are fabulous and last month Kip brought handmade, chocolate-dipped strawberries! Bring your own chairs and cooler; sit outside, under the stars and enjoy the show: including classic cartoons. Proceeds benefit our beloved Community Center; helping us keep the doors open so Neighbors may continue to gather in joyful celebration. Hope you will join us.

and gourmet hotdogs!

Happy Father’s Day to all you amazing Dads out there! We love you and we are grateful for your presence in our lives every single day. Big hugz, dudes! Our very dear Jim Martin is enjoying Father’s month! His beautiful daughter Jamie visited San Diego recently, all the way from Coeur d’Alene Idaho: with her husband Daniel and our grandson Tucker. Short but sweet, Jim and I joined them for a lovely visit in Balboa Park and Old Town. My son Erick also hung out with us for a few hours: he lives in San Diego. At the end of June, we will be visiting San Diego again; this time with Jim’s son Michael and his beautiful wife Jenny, along with our grandsons Matthew and Zachary and adorable granddaughter Kayli. Feeling loved and very grateful!

Our Potluck Hostesses Mary Koval and her daughter Chris van Nortrick are moving off the Mesa. We will miss them both; they are familiar faces at every event we have at the Community Center and valuable volunteers at the monthly USDA food giveaways and last-Saturday Potlucks. Thank you for your years of service Mary-in-the-Morning and Chris: your Neighbors wish you well.

This month’s Potluck is on Saturday, June 27th, from 4pm, at the Copper Mountain Mesa Community Center. We’d love to see you and eat your delicious food: stay well!

Our little Community has settled firmly into the “hot” season. We are rapidly approaching the longest day of the year and the Summer solstice will officially propel us into Summer: may I hear a collective groan? Here we go, Loves: brace yourselves!

Even though the Spring 2015 semester ended last month and all the Graduates celebrated their student hearts out: Copper Mountain College is still buzzing with activity. Students seeking last-minute counselling appointments; registration requests; financial aid assistance: there’s never a dull moment. I have been working in the ACCESS department for almost five months now and I am really enjoying it. We assist Students at Copper Mountain College, who have physical, mental or emotional challenges and we motivate our Students to be their very best in every possible way. If you stop by to see me, remember my Student name is Anne Alice Thacker!

Our Summer semester begins on Monday June 15. Come by and see us; there is still time to register although some classes may have a waiting list. I will be taking an American History class. I’m really excited; I’ve done African, European, British and World History; but never specifically American History through 1877. It’s an intensive course, however: four days a week for a month: phew!

Our Copper Mountain Mesa Community Association Board meeting is this Saturday June 13, from 10am. Feel free to join us at the Community Center, 65-336 Winters road. Our Treasure Thrift Room is always open during Events held at the Center; so come on down for some excellent shopping and the joy of knowing you’re a contributing member of your Community!

A sampling of the grooviful stuff available in the Treasure Room.
Our USDA food give-away is this Monday, June 15; third Monday of this month, at the Center from 8:30am. Our all-Volunteer crew will be there to assist needy families in the Community.

Starring Kirk Douglas and the sizzling hot Gena Rowlands
We are proud to invite you to our “Movie under the Stars” night, next Saturday, June 20th: 6:30pm. We’re watching “Lonely are the Brave”: a 1962 movie, starring Kirk Douglas and Gena Rowlands. Check our website for more information: www.coppermountain.mesa.org. Stay well!

Gourmet dogs: either Nathans or Hebrew National will be served.

Our little Community is gathering this afternoon for the Potluck party, held at the Center on the last Saturday of every month, from 4pm. Mary Koval and her daughter Chris, have been hostessing the Potluck ever since Chris Jonas passed away last July. With their monthly themes and creative decorating, Mary and Chris are the driving force behind the resurging popularity of the Potluck party. Last month they attracted 11 guests and here are some of the delicious dishes: Bob Deloyd brought his to-die-for Road-kill Stew! Dorothy Jacobsen prepared Scalloped potatoes and a Strawberry cake; while daughter Dyan Carroll made Yummy Ribs, broccoli with cheese sauce and a Ginger-spice Trifle. Mary brought her Fried Chicken, with potato salad and key lime pie: daughter Chris provided Pea Salad, Saucy Jello and Peachy Cheesecake Pie. Charles Lange brought his appetite and dollars; while Susie Gardner and husband John prepared Honey-mustard Cucumber salad. Yvonne Francis concocted a great Pasta Salad; while Barbara and Ed Beneville created the Ultimate Casserole. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. For the May 30th Potluck this afternoon at 4pm , come on over to our beautiful Copper Mountain Mesa Community Center, located at 65-336 Winters Road and let’s chow down!

Fully laden potluck! Yum!
Next Saturday, June 6th, we will gather with Neighbors from 8-11am for the monthly first Saturday Breakfast. We have been attracting excellent numbers to recent Breakfasts and everyone always has lots of fun, enhanced by super-delicious food. We hope to see your smiling face!

I attended a meeting at the Wonder Valley Community Center last week; which was called so Neighborhood concerns could be addressed directly to the Bureau of Land Management, concerning their recent decision to open up 10,400+ miles of dirt roads (from Morongo Valley, to Wonder Valley) to Off-Highway Vehicles. If your road borders any Bureau of Land Management parcels, which are dotted around throughout the Basin, you will be experiencing increased traffic, noise, dust and hazards in your neck-o-the-Desert. Meeting attendees submitted letter opposing BLM’s decision: we have until June 4th to submit our letters of opposal. Please visit coppermountainmesa.org for more information. Stay well!
